Maris Stella High School
2024 Publication Design
Project Overview
A comprehensive editorial and publication design for Maris Stella High School's 2024 yearbook. The project required balancing the rich heritage of a prominent Singaporean institution with a fresh, youthful, and forward-looking visual identity. The resulting design seamlessly integrates extensive student data, achievements, and photography into an engaging, highly readable layout.
Role
Art Direction, Editorial Design, Layout Optimization
Tools Used
Adobe InDesign (Typography & Layout), Adobe Photoshop (Image Editing & Compositing), Adobe Illustrator (Vector Assets)
The cover page establishes the visual narrative. It features an artistic, double-exposure illustration where a boy's profile is filled with a starry blue night sky, overlapping a lighter silhouette. In the foreground, two students in crisp uniforms gaze upward, reinforcing the theme of looking to the future. Bold, traditional Chinese calligraphy balances the top right, while the school motto "FAITH VISION SERVICE" anchors the bottom right alongside a subtle watermark of the school's heritage architecture.
Design Concept & Visual Direction
Thematic Core
The overarching visual theme utilizes ethereal blue watercolor textures and double-exposure elements to symbolize growth, vision, and the limitless potential of the students.
Grid & Layout Mastery
Managing dense amounts of information such as committee rosters, teacher names, and achievement lists required a rigorous but flexible grid system. The clean whitespace allows the content to breathe, ensuring the publication remains elegant rather than cluttered.
Typography
I implemented a sophisticated typographic hierarchy, pairing a refined, classic serif for section headers (honoring the school's tradition) with a clean, modern sans-serif for body copy and data (ensuring maximum legibility for lists).
Visual Pacing
To keep the reader engaged, structured data blocks are dynamically offset by staggered, scrapbook-style photo collages accented by soft, organic watercolor brushstrokes.
